Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail has said that it was a big goal to increase the production of clean energy in the Maldives.

During the fourth meeting of SAARC Council of Experts on Energy Regulators (Electricity) that is ongoing at Hotel Jen in Male, the Minister said that Maldives spends a lot on purchase of oil, and expensive electricity bills are a common complain of businesses as well. Hence, the Minister noted that the government will be working to find ways to solve such challenges.

The Minister described his biggest challenge in office being the lack of inexpensive electrical services.

Minister Fayyaz also revealed that discussions were underway with the Environment Ministry to provide cheap and sustainable electricity.

The meeting was held to finalize a draft of the road-map to initiate a regional power trade through the implementation of the SAARC Framework Agreement and implementing Electricity.
