Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has said that Indian assistance in the development of a 'Radheef' for Maldivian language was very important.

The Indian Prime Minister made the statement during his address to the Maldivian parliament. Noting that the Hindhi language shared similar words with Dhivehi, Modi stressed that it was important for India to assist in the development of a 'radheef' for Dhivehi language, while working to protect the Maldivian culture and heritage.

He highlighted that the governments of both countries were not the reason for the relations between the countries, but the relations between Indians and Maldivians.

Modi stressed that India's highest priority will always be the neighbouring countries, and under their 'Neighbourhood First' policy, priority will always be given to the Maldives first.

Following PM Modi's address to the Maldives, a copy of the first constitution was gifted to him, as a token of appreciation for India’s deference towards the Maldives.

During his official state visit, India and Maldives have signed six MOUs.
