Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has arrived in the Maldives on Saturday, for his first official visit to the country following President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's election last September.
Modi landed in Velana International Airport around 3:10pm. He was received by Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer along with Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid at the airport.
A 100 member delegation is accompanying Modi on his visit, according to the Foreign Ministry. He was officially welcomed by the President, at the Republic Square at 4:00pm before heading for the President Office to hold talks with the President.
Six agreements will be signed between the countries after the talks, to be followed by a press briefing. However, the briefing will not be open to questions by journalists.
During the visit, Modi will also be presented with the highest state honour of Maldives, Order of the rule of Izzudeen. The honor is being presented to Modi in recognition of the many services he has performed to cement the longstanding, amicable ties between the two countries, and for the magnanimous assistance that the Indian government has continued to provide the Maldives under Prime Minister Modi’s stewardship.
Modi is expected to meet with Vice President Faisal Naseem after the signing ceremony. Following his meeting with the VP, Modi will head to the Parliament where he will first meet with Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed. He will then address the Parliament sitting around 6:45pm.
After a two-day visit to the Maldives, the Indian Prime Minister is set to visit Sri Lanka.
