The Animal Welfare Ministry has taken over the facility built in Hulhumale' to care for cats roaming the streets of Male'.
The facility, "Olhuhiya", built by the City Council in Hulhumale' Phase 2 to care for cats roaming the streets of the Male' area, was opened on November 2, 2024. While the City Council had decided to take cats there, they were instructed to hand over the facility to the Ministry, stating that the services of the cat facility were not complete.
However, the City Council said they would hand over the facility to the Ministry only after being reimbursed for the expenses incurred by the Council. With that issue pending, cats have not yet been taken to the cat facility.
The Animal Welfare Ministry said in a post on X today that after completing all the paperwork and legal asset transfer work, the Male' City Council has officially handed over the facility to the Ministry today.
