Following the motion to amend the parliament regulations under Article 88, an announcement was made last night by the parliament seeking public opinion on the regulation.

Anyone with a suggestion or a comment is advised send them to the parliament Regulation Committee in writing or via the committee email at [email protected] before 1 p.m. of 10 June 2019. A copy of the regulation is available for download at the parliament website.

At the second session of the 19th Parliament, a committee of 11 MPs were formed to amend the parliament regulations within 30 days. The Chairpersonof the committee is the MP for Maradhoo constituency, Ibrahim Shareef. Deputy Chairperson is the MP for Naifaru constituency, Ahmed Shiyam.

The committee meeting yesterday saw the parliament debate duration changed to four hours. While the debate duration was previously three hours, MPs get the opportunity based on the representation percentage. Hence, the most time is given to the party with the most MPs in the parliament.

Yesterday’s decision gives two minutes of debate time to each MP. And one hour of the debate duration is distributed among the six political parties with each party getting ten minutes.
