Two aircraft will be placed in the lagoon of K. Kudagiri Picnic Island to create a diving attraction for the people of Male’. A dive wreck will also be developed as part of the project.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Director General Ibrahim Naeem, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been conducted to prepare for sinking the two aircraft. Additional assessments are also being carried out for constructing more underwater wrecks.
The aircraft—two Dornier planes previously operated by Air Maldives—are currently stored in the Farukolhufushi area of Hulhumale’ Second Phase and will soon be relocated to Kudagiri.
