A planned ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war was delayed on Sunday (19 January) after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced it would not start until Hamas provided a list of hostages to be released. The ceasefire was originally scheduled for 8:30 am local time.
Hamas said the delay was due to "technical reasons" but confirmed its commitment to the agreement. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s office stated that the Israeli military was instructed to continue operations until the list was received.
An Israeli military spokesperson warned that attacks would continue until Hamas met its obligations. The military also said it was ready to enforce the ceasefire and respond to any violations.
The ceasefire deal, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, aims to release hostages and bring an end to the 15-month conflict. However, Netanyahu called the first 42 days a "temporary ceasefire" and said Israel was prepared to resume fighting if necessary, with U.S. support.
The delay has left hopes for peace hanging in the balance.
