A hammer attack at Hosei University's Tama Campus in Tokyo has left at least eight people injured. The attack took place on Friday afternoon, and a woman in her 20's has been apprehended, Japanese media reported.
According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, all the victims are conscious, and police investigations are ongoing. The assailant, believed to be a university student, was stopped by campus staff before being taken into custody.
Emergency responders, including multiple ambulances and police vehicles, were seen at the scene in Tokyo’s Machida district, a suburban area of the capital.
Violent crimes are rare in Japan due to strict gun control laws. However, occasional attacks have occurred, such as the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022 and a stabbing incident in southwestern Japan in December 2024, where a junior high school student was killed.
Authorities are working to determine the motive behind this attack.
