MDP is set to cast a vote tonight to decide which candidate would be nominated to become the Speaker of Parliament among the elected members from the party.

The first meeting of the 19th session of the parliament would be held tomorrow night. Only newly elected members are eligible to vote in the selection.

Speaking to 'One Online', a media official of the party confirmed that the meeting scheduled at 9:30pm tonight and Dharubaaruge was one for the elected members of the parliament.

While MDP had been able to sweep up a super majority at the Parliament by winning 65 out of the 87 seats, five members from the party had shown interest in becoming the Speaker of Parliament. The strongest contenders seem to be North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam and Vilufushi MP, Hassan Afeef.Apart from these two, Central Henveiru MP, Ali Azim, Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam and Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef had previously expressed their interests of being the Speaker as well.

Even though MDP will decide on a specific candidate to contest for the role, there are no legal obligations holding back any candidate from contesting for the role of Speaker.

Even though Chairperson of MDP, Hassan Latheef and other officials were unavailable for a comment regarding the meeting, 'One Online' has learnt that voting will be carried out by a show of hands.
