The Senate of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has decided to dissolve the party.

This decision was made at the party's Senate meeting held today.

PPM/PNC Media Coordinator Ahmed Hamdhaan told "One" today that the Senate meeting unanimously passed the resolution to dissolve PPM.

42 members participated in the vote to dissolve the party.

The Senate meeting was chaired by the party's two vice presidents, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam and Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon.

While the PPM Senate has decided to dissolve the party, rumors of its dissolution had circulated before but were previously denied.

At the time of the decision to dissolve, PPM has 34,698 registered members.

PPM was founded by the "Z-DRP" faction when DRP split. The party, led by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, governed the Maldives from 2013 to 2018. Former President Abdulla Yameen won the presidency on the PPM ticket.
