A new bill has been presented to the Maldivian Parliament to establish the Attorney General's Office as an independent entity, separate from the Civil Service. The proposed legislation was introduced by Maafannu South MP Abdulla Rifau.

The bill aims to define the role of the Attorney General by outlining the conditions for their appointment, their responsibilities, and the procedures required to perform their duties effectively. It also seeks to create an independent office that functions as a distinct government institution, enabling the Attorney General to carry out their duties without the constraints of the Civil Service structure. Furthermore, the bill details the legal responsibilities of the office, the services it must provide, and the scope of authority granted to the Attorney General.

Provisions to enhance transparency and accountability are also included. The Attorney General will be required to submit an annual statement disclosing assets, business interests, and liabilities. Additionally, the Attorney General must be answerable to the President and Parliament. The bill also includes guidelines for transferring the Attorney General's responsibilities to another individual when necessary.

The legislation outlines the terms and conditions for senior roles, including the Deputy Attorney General and Solicitor General. It specifies procedures for appointments, removals, resignations, and the determination of salaries and allowances within the office.

By establishing a distinct Attorney General's Office, the bill aims to streamline the execution of legal duties and reinforce the independence of the legal advisory function in government. This move reflects the government's commitment to improving governance and ensuring the effective delivery of legal services in the Maldives.
