Meedhoo MP and MDA leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has voiced support for a constitutional amendment requiring lawmakers to lose their seats if they leave the party through which they were elected.
Speaking on RaajjeTV, Siyam highlighted the importance of respecting the constitution, which he noted was the result of extensive effort and deliberation. He argued that such significant amendments should not be rushed and must include public and political consultation.
Siyam expressed his backing for the amendment, stating that elected officials should remain loyal to their parties. He explained that when candidates receive party tickets, it is the party and its supporters that ensure their victory. "If I defect from the party that gave me a ticket and move to another party after being elected, I should lose my seat," he said.
He emphasised that this principle is observed in many parts of the world and should apply in the Maldives as well. Siyam added that any constitutional amendment involving such significant changes must be approached carefully and with input from citizens and political stakeholders.
The debate around political loyalty and party affiliation remains a pressing issue, with calls for stronger measures to maintain the integrity of the democratic process.
