Maamigilli MP Qasim Ibrahim has stated that the current situation of the Maldives economy is not related to the government, adding that he supports all fiscal reform measures being taken to overcome the situation.
He made the statement while speaking during the debate on a resolution that seeks opinions on ending the rising numbers of parliamentarians in each assembly and reducing the number of parliamentarians.
Qasim said the people are closely watching the changes brought by the government with a supermajority. They are also looking at the efforts being made to bring good people and put the country on the path of reform.
"The country is in this situation today not because of what today's government is doing. But today we have to stand on our own feet without entering the IMF program even after taking bitter medicine. I agree and fully support all necessary steps," he said.
It first has to cut government spending and liquidate loss-making companies. He said the country should be run on the Singapore model by giving opportunities to the private sector and taking advantage of the tax system.
Qasim further said that the President should reduce the state expenditure.
