First batch of Hajj pilgrims sponsored by the state departed to Saudi Arabia on Friday.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision to sponsor 50 pilgrims to perform Hajj at the Government's expense within the first three weeks after assuming office last year.

Islamic Ministry held the draw to select the first round of pilgrims to perform Hajj this year. An additional 10 names were drawn in case anyone selected in the draw were unable to travel to Saudi for Hajj.

President Dr. Muizzu pledged to sponsor 1,000 people for Hajj pilgrimage through state funds during his tenure.
