Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the Maldives is their valued partner and neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region.

Modi's statement comes after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had congratulated him on being re-elected as the Prime Minister of India for a third term. In his congratulatory post on X, the President stated that he looks "forward to working together to advance our shared interests in pursuit of shared prosperity and stability for our two countries".

In response, Modi thanked the Maldivian President, adding that the "Maldives is our valued partner and neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region. I too look forward to closer cooperation for further strengthening our bilateral ties."

After President Muizzu took over the government, Maldives' foreign relations with India have deteriorated after three deputy ministers insulted Modi on social media and indirect criticism from some government officials.
