The newly elected members of the 20th Parliament have taken their oath of office.

Chief Justice Muthasim Adnan administered the oath to the members at a special ceremony held at the Parliament this morning.

The 20th Parliament will begin its work today as members have been sworn in. The first session of the 20th Parliament will be held at 10:15 am today.

The agenda for the meeting is to elect the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament. The next step is conducting work on compilation of the parliament regulation of procedure under Article 88 of the Constitution.

The 20th parliament, which was sworn in today, will have 93 members.

The PNC hold a supermajority in the new parliamentary assembly with 75 out of 93 seats. This includes 67 seats it won in the elections and the seats of the eight independents who joined the party in the weeks after.

The opposition MDP won only 12 seats in the parliamentary elections. The new parliament will have two independent members.

The PNC has decided to elect Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdullah as the Speaker and Dhigurah MP Ahmed Nazim as the Deputy Speaker.
