After a month-long holiday, the academic new year has begun in all schools across the Maldives.

The academic new year started today with 96,000 students. Of these, 40,300 are female and 42,700 students are male.

According to the Ministry of Education, about 17,000 of the 96,000 students are studying in the Male' area. 13,000 students will attend private schools from LKG to grade 12, while more than 9,000 of these students will be studying the Male' area, the ministry said.

The academic new year also saw the admission of 2,250 students to grade one in the Male' area, while 2,081 students applied for grades other than grade one in the area. 1,126 students have transferred from schools in the atolls to schools in Male' area for the new academic year.

According to the Ministry of Education, 12,662 teachers will work in government schools in the new academic year. Of these, 10,729 are local teachers. The number of foreign teachers is 1,933.

This academic year, 162 government schools will be single-session and 52 schools will be double-session based.
