Former Minister of State for Housing Akram Kamaluddin has been ordered by Civil Court to pay MVR 1.1 million to former MP Mohamed Musthafa.
The case pertains to the recovery of MVR 1.7 million that Musthafa had deposited four times as cheque to an account opened in the name of Akram Kamaluddin.
According to the chargesheet, Musthafa first deposited MVR 1.15 million in Akram's account, MVR 300,000 in the second cheque, MVR 200,00 in the third and MVR 60,000 in the fourth.
In his petition filed in the Civil Court in 2019, Musthafa had sought to recover not only the money he had given to Akram but also the MVR 100,00 he had paid as lawyer fees.
In his plea, Akram had contended that Mustafa had to be paid MVR 400,000 and the rest had been paid, but had not provided proof to the Civil Court, nor could he prove the exact amount that Mustafa had claimed to have given to Akram.
Therefore, the civil court ordered Akram to pay a total of MVR 1.1 million, including MVR 400,000 and USD 50,000 (MVR 773,000), to Musthafa within a month.
