Chinese Ambassador to Maldives, Wang Lixin, has stated that all the projects carried out by China in the Maldives have been at the request of the Government.

The Ambassador made the remarks in response to a comment made by former president Mohamed Nasheed in an interview to an Indian newspaper recently, in which he said all projects undertaken by China in the Maldives are designed to fail and that the country would never recover from China's debt trap.

Ambassador Lixin responded to the claim stating that China has never initiated any projects in Maldives and that all projects undertaken by China have been at the request of the Maldivian Government for the benefit of the public.

She further said that the 'China debt trap' narrative has been spun to criticise China and that the Maldivian public will not believe such narratives.

"All projects undertaken by China have been at the request of the Maldivian Government. China has not initiated any projects on our own in the Maldives," Ambassador Lixin said.

The Ambassador further said that the Government of Maldives also determines the terms and conditions of all Chinese projects in the Maldives and China's role is to provide financial assistance to these projects and implement the projects.
