Parliament on Monday passed to appoint Former Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer as the Commissioner General of Taxation.

The post of Tax Commissioner became vacant after the incumbent Fathullah Jameel resigned to contest the parliamentary elections.

President Dr Mohammed Muizzu sent two names to the Parliament as his nomination for the post. Former Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeedh Mohammed is at the top of the list of two candidates sent by President Muizzu for parliamentary approval. Zareer's name was included in the second place.

After the Economic Committee of Parliament interviewed the two members, only four members voted in favor of appointing Yazeedh to the post. However, Zareer was approved by 10 votes.

Therefore, the committee decided to approve the appointment of Zareer to the post by 45 votes out of 48 members present in the session.
