Over 2,000 cases of sexual crimes have been reported to the police in the last six years, according to the data collected by the Parliament.

The sexual crime statistics were collected by the Human Rights and Gender Committee of the Parliament in response to a resolution moved by former MP and current Council and Cities Minister Adam Shareef last session.

The report, which includes the information gathered during the research phase of the resolution, was presented to the Parliament today.

According to the report, a total of 2,169 cases of sexual offenses were reported to the police in the last six years. The highest number of cases were filed in 2020, where 487 cases were filed.

Last year saw the lowest number of sexual offenses reported in the past six years. 234 cases were reported that year.

Numbers of sexual offenses reported in different years:

- 2018: 362 cases

- 2019: 410 cases

- 2020: 487 cases

- 2021: 342 cases

- 2022: 334 cases

- 2023: 234 cases

According to the report, from 2018 to October 2023, the Prosecutor General's Office filed a total of 47 cases under the Sexual Offenses Act. However, the court found 10 cases convicted during that period. Eight cases were found unproven.
