Parliament's Economic Committee has approved the appointment of former Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation, Hassan Zareer as Commissioner General of Taxation.

The Tax Commissioner's post fell vacant after his predecessor Fathullah Jameel resigned from the post in order to contest the parliamentary elections.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had forwarded two to the Parliament for appointment.

The list included former Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeed Mohamed and Zareer's name.

At today's meeting of the Economic Committee, after the committee interviewed the two, only four members voted in favour of Yazeed's appointment, but Zareer was approved by a vote of 10 members.

Zareer currently also serves as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Maldives.
