MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has said that no one in the party leadership has any intention of resigning after the defeat in last year's presidential election and this year's parliamentary elections.
After MDP lost two major elections, some of its ordinary members and activists have called for the resignation of the leadership on social media.
MDP has decided to conduct a study to determine the reason for its defeat in the elections. The study will determine whether the defeat was due to the way it campaigned or a leadership issue.
"No one in any leadership position of the party has the intention of resigning at this time. That is not even acceptable to us. In elections, some will face defeat and others will win," he said.
Fayyaz said most of the people who called for the resignation of the party leadership belonged to the ruling coalition and a small number of MDP members also called for it. If the members think that the leadership of MDP should be changed, they will give it, but this is not the time to give such an opportunity.
He added that the leadership will not do anything at this time to deprive MDP of the opportunity to remain in the opposition or work in the opposition.
MDP President Abdullah Shahid told a press conference that Fayyaz should not resign from the post of party chairman.
