Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam has announced that the newly elected members of the 20th Parliament will be sworn in on Tuesday, May 28.

Starting today's sitting of the Parliament, Speaker Aslam congratulated all those who were elected to the 20th Parliament.

Speaker Aslam said the parliamentary office is making preparations for the swearing-in ceremony on May 28.

He further stated that the current session of the 19th Parliament will run until May 15 as per Rule 24( H) of the Rules of Procedure. Therefore, the last session of the 19th Parliament will be held on May 13 unless otherwise determined by the Parliament, he said.

Aslam said the work of the parliament would continue until then.

The ruling PNC won a large majority in the 20th parliamentary elections, winning 66 seats. The opposition MDP won 12 seats in the election. Independent candidates won 11 seats while the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) won two seats. Mohammed Nazim's MNP and Gasim Ibrahim's JP won only the seats they contested.
