Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been freed of his money laundering and bribery charges after High Court on Thursday overturned Criminal Court's sentence.

Yameen was sentenced on 25 December 2022 for 11 years and fined MVR 5 million for money laundering and bribery in Aarah case through MMPRC.

Yameen's legal team appealed Criminal Court's sentence at High Court and hearings were concluded on 21 November 2023.

High Court on Thursday overturned the 4-year sentence over bribery charges.

The Court also overturned the 7-year sentence over money laundering as well as the fine of MVR 5 million.

The Criminal Court ruling was overturned unanimously by the High Court bench presiding over the hearing.
