Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to support People's National Front (PNF's candidate for Fuvahmulah Uthuru constituency, Mohamed Sharafuddin.

MDP does not have a candidate contesting for Fuvahmulah Uthuru constituency. Apart from PNF's Sharafuddin, PNC's candidate Hamadh Abdulla is contesting for the constituency.

MDP has urged all their supporters to vote for Sharafuddin in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled to be held on Sunday.

Former vice president Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said on X that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is trying to narrow down the rights of the opposition, calling his tactics undemocratic.

"President Dr. Muizzu wants a majority in the parliament to hide the corruption in his government and to create challenges for the opposition. MDP's decision to support PNF's candidate is a sound decision. The entirety of Maldives should not support the President," Dr. Jameel said.

MDP had also decided to support independent candidate for V. Felidhoo constituency, Ali Zahir, as there are no MDP candidates contesting for the seat.

Ali Zahir had filled the role of Chief of Staff at the President's Office during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's tenure.
