The Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed has stated that the idea is to ensure that goods imported from China and India can be paid in Maldivian currency.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Laamu Atoll, Saeed said the Maldives trades goods worth of US$ 720 million with China and US$ 780 million with India.
He also noted that arrangements will be made to pay for goods imported from Yuan, China in Maldivian currency, and that the same would be arranged for goods imported from India as well.
Saeed said it would strengthen the Rufiyaa against the dollar. The result is a depreciation of the dollar.
