Former president Yameen Abdul Gayoom will join the inaugural meeting of political party People's National Front (PNF) on Monday night, one of the leading party founders Mohamed Maleeh Jamal has said.

Maleeh made the announcement in a post on X on Sunday.

"President Yameen will attend the inaugural meeting of PNF on 8 April," Maleeh said.

Yameen is currently serving house arrest after being sentenced to prison for 11 years for money laundering and accepting bribes. Maldives Correction Services (MCS) had allowed Yameen to switch to house arrest on the condition to not partake in political activities and give interviews to media. As such, Yameen had sent a letter to MCS seeking permission to attend the party's inaugural meeting.

Correction's media official told 'One' that the institution has responded to Yameen's request.

"We cannot share details of the response as it includes personal communication with an individual," the media official said.

Elections Commission (EC) had given the go-ahead to PNF formation on last Thursday. Yameen is one of the leaders behind the party formation.

Zain Abdulla Yameen, son of the former president Yameen, was given approval to form a political party on 29 November 2023.
