Maldives Customs Service has inaugurated the 'Maritime Surveillance and Border Protection Section'.

Customs said that the new section will report to Directorate of Enforcement and Border Security and will do surveillance work to ensure drugs and other illegal items are not smuggled into the country.

Customs said that work is ongoing to secure vessels and equipment for the section and that a new logo and uniform have already been designed for the latter.

Additionally, Customs had acquired a vessel for surveillance two years ago and the vessel has been operational since, with two 30ft vessels and an 85ft vessel to be provided by the Japanese government.

The 30ft vessels will be made operation by mid year and the 85ft vessel will be made operation in the first quarter of 2025, Customs said.

Customs further said that discussions have been held with Chinese Embassy and USA 'Export Control and Related Border Security' regarding vessels and equipment needed for the new section.
