Hussain Siraj has been elected as the President of the Maldives Bar Council.

The election for the post of Bar Council President was held following the death of former President, Ismail Visham. He died on January 31 this year.

Siraj and Mohammed Faisal contested the Bar Council election. Siraj got 224 votes while Faisal got 172 votes.

Siraj is a lawyer who has represented major civil cases. In addition to advocacy, he is a law drafter. He is also a consultant at S&A Law Firm and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Siraj is also the Vice Chairman of the Maldives International Arbitration Centre. He was appointed to the post on 16 April 2019.

A member of the Bar Council's Executive Committee was also elected today. Only Ahmed Shifau contested the post. Therefore, 248 lawyers voted to elect Shifau to the post. 88 lawyers voted against.
