The Election Commission (EC) has appointed its member Ali Nashat as its vice-president.
The post of vice-president of the EC fell vacant after Ismail Habib, who had earlier held the post, left the commission after completing two terms as a member.
The EC said that since Habib had completed two terms as a member of the commission, Nashat was appointed as vice-president at the general body meeting of the commission held today in accordance with the provisions of Section 7 of the Election Commission Act.
Habib congratulated Nashat in a post on X today. He said Nashat has the skills and ability to make EC services accessible to political parties, candidates and all those who seek services from the commission by modernising elections and converting EC services into a digital system.
Nashat was last appointed as a member of the EC on November 16 last year, after receiving approval by parliament on November 15.
Nashat was previously appointed to the EC on July 25, 2018, under former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
