President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government is working to further reduce the prices of basic commodities through STO during the coming Ramadan month.
The President was responding to a question from a citizen in the "Raeesge Javaabu" asking for food price reduction during Ramadan.
"As the holy month of Ramadan begins, the price reduction of all the most basic items through STO is now underway. They have already started selling at cheaper prices. We will continue to do more to reduce the prices," he said.
The President said the medium and long-term plan is to ensure food security in the Maldives by producing crops that can be grown in the Maldives. Then the price of goods will also go down, he said.
Basic food items are among the most expensive items during Ramadan. These include onions, eggs, and garlic. STO is now importing basic food items for the month of Ramadan and selling them at cheap prices.
