Micro-grid seawater desalination plants have been established in 5 islands under Chinese government aid.

Construction Ministry said on Friday that the plants were established in R. Alifushi, Lh. Olhuvelifushi, HA. Kelaa, GA. Dhaandhoo, and K. Kaashidhoo. The plants will be powered by solar energy, the Ministry said.

The plants in Alifushi, Olhuvelifushi, Kelaa and Dhaandhoo can produce 200 tonnes of water a day with 200kW solar panels. The plant in Kaashidhoo can produce 200 tonnes of water a day with 100kW solar panels and 100kW wind turbines.

The physical work on the plants were commenced in April 2022. The technical handover certificate was signed on 12 April 2023.
