President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he will amend the laws and increase the funds to councils and WDCs under the Decentralisation Act.
The President said the central government should collect all the revenue and budget it and then give a piece of the budget to the councils to change the way things are done in the islands.
Instead, councils should be given the opportunity to carry out various economic and industrial activities, he said.
The President said that the decentralisation of part of the tax money received by the state to the councils is an empowerment given to the people.
The President said the money given to councils in the form of block grants would be increased by amending the laws. He also said that the laws would be amended and the existing grants from the state budget to women’s development committees would be added to the budget of the committees for the activities of the committees especially the salaries of the members.
This will enable more work to be done for the development of women, he said.
The President said it is important to have members who will assist the government in the upcoming parliamentary elections to facilitate these matters by amending the laws.
