Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has revealed that MVR 50 million was disbursed to fishermen last Tuesday, adding that the balance will be paid before the month of Ramadan.
Referring to the fishermen's protest in Kooddoo last month, the Minister said the outstanding MVR 280 million would be paid before the fifth day of this month. Since then, MIFCO has released MVR 105 million to fishermen.
Replying to a question from One Online at a press conference held at the Seneco Hall of the Voice of Maldives today to share the latest information on the issues raised by the Ministry of Fisheries in the Hafthaa-14 road map, the minister said the process of disbursing money to fishermen has now resumed.
The Minister said that MVR 147 million is currently outstanding to the fishermen. That’s one month’s worth of money.
The Minister added that once the cash flow of MIFCO has stabilized, the aim will be to start paying the money within 48 hours. He said he is working to achieve this as soon as possible.
