Former President , Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that he faced defeat in last year’s presidential election since President Mohamed Nasheed was not with him.
The Parliamentary Elections are currently scheduled to be held on April 21. During a campaign rally for the elections, the former President highlighted that there were many reasons why they could not work with Nasheed after the MDP Presidential Primary.
"After the primary, they could not move forward with us. One of the biggest reasons for the loss and failure of the presidential election was that they did not work with us," he said.
Therefore, it is important to work together to elect the candidates who won the primary. If we are divided and cannot work together, the result will be the opposite, he said. It is important to move forward from past experience, he said.
The relationship between Nasheed and Solih deteriorated and two factions were formed within the MDP. Nasheed's faction, within the MDP and the parliament had done a lot of work against the government.
He also accused Solih and the government of corruption and said that Solih is ruling against the principles of the MDP.
The issue between the two factions has not been resolved and the pro-Nasheed members have left the MDP and formed a new party called The Democrats. Later, Nasheed also joined the party.
