President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he will make the domestic airport a reality and build a brand new hospital in Haa Alif Dhidhoo as promised during his presidential campaign.
Speaking to the residents of Dhidhoo on Sunday morning, the President noted that due to the geographical composition of the Maldives, a strong transport system is required to further strengthen the economy.
The President said the government has decided to build many airports in the Maldives which is being heavily criticised. He further stressed that the country will not be able to progress further without a proper transport system.
The President said the airport project on this island would be carried out as promised along with a land reclamation project. The President added that the island needs to improve the health system and a new hospital will be built on the island with many facilities.
"There is no space in the budget. But we are working to get foreign funding. We will start the construction of the new hospital as soon as the funding is available. This is the top priority of the government," the President said.
The President said the hospital does not have a CT scan service and there is only one ambulance, adding that the hospital will also receive upgrades for now.
In addition, the President will dredge the land, implement housing projects, and establish sports facilities.
