Maldives has decided to make a statement at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on behalf of the Palestinian government, Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer said.

Minister Zameer was speaking at the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament on a resolution moved by Saud Hussain calling for an end to Israel's inhuman acts against the Palestinian people and an independent Palestinian state.

In the committee, Minister Zameer said the UN Security Council should consider the legal questions raised by Palestine over Israel's actions in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem. The UN General Assembly has requested the ICJ for an advisory opinion.

A written statement was submitted to the ICJ on July 25, 2023, at the request of the Palestinian government. Maldives is also scheduled to give a verbal statement at the ICJ on 26th of this month.

“The Maldives government is making the necessary preparations for this,” Zameer said.

Zameer said the Maldivian government will continue to cooperate with Palestine within the international legal system.
