President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will connect Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo with the Maavarulu Airport located in the same lagoon.

During his visit to Gaddhoo as part of his visit to the Southern Atolls, the President noted that there is a lot of work to be done to further develop the Maavarulu airport. It is also very important for the development of Gaddhoo and the region, he said.

"I would like to say that all the necessary works will be done to further develop the airport and connect the airport with this island by road. It may take some time to find space in the budget," he said.

The President said tourism plays a very important role in the development of the region and therefore he will work to open more resorts in the province. The President said that this would increase the number of flights and make Maavarulu Airport a better quality airport.

“Dredging will be done next year and the work of connecting the airport will start next year,” he said.

The President also said that the work of the hospital and land dredging work in Gaddhoo will start very soon. The development of the hospital was awarded on January 26 last year but the practical work has not started.

The development of the airport started in June 2018 during the administration of former President Abdullah Yameen. The airport’s runway, taxiway, and passenger jetty were constructed by MTCC.

The test flight landed at the airport on March 11, while scheduled flights were launched in July of that year.
