The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has said that MIFCO will be paying for the fish purchased from fishermen at the rate of MVR 25 per kg.
During a session of the People's Majlis, the Minister responded to questions raised by MP Yaagoob Abdulla of the Dhaandhoo constituency regarding fish payments and price adjustments.
Yaagoob inquired about the discrepancy between the promised price of MVR 25 per kilogram for fish delivered during this fishing season and the current payment rate of MVR 20. He questioned the validity of reports claiming bills would be adjusted to reflect the original MVR 25 price and asked if there were any plans to increase the current price of MVR 20 to alleviate difficulties faced by private companies.
The Minister clarified that payments for fish delivered at the promised price of MVR 25 would be made at that same rate, emphasizing that adjustments to the agreed price were not authorized.
Additionally, he highlighted the President's directive to maintain the current fish price of MVR 20 and explained that there were no plans to lower it further, even to accommodate potential difficulties faced by private companies.
The Minister concluded by mentioning that the MVR 20 price point already includes a subsidy of MVR 6 per kilogram.
