President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that in order to maintain peace within the country, even politicians need to be freed.
Speaking to the people of Feydhoo last evening as part of his visit to Addu City, the President said that he promised during the presidential election campaign that peace should be brought to this country and that it could only be done by ending the spirit of vengeance.
"What I believe is that there has to be peace in the nation. That no one should be hurt politically. What we are witnessing is that those who ruled the country in the past are taken away and arrested once they are out of power. That is not how I will rule the nation. There will be no one to be arrested on political grounds," he said.
The President also said that he had said that he would not interfere in the trial, adding that the judiciary has been functioning with full independence since the inception of this government and that former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom should also get justice.
"I believe that former president Yameen going without receiving justice obstructs the peace in the nation. Justice delayed is justice denied. Therefore, he should also get justice from the judiciary. The judiciary is running it without any interference from our government. Therefore, justice should be served and president Yameen should get justice," he said.
The President further said that he hoped that President Yameen would get justice soon through the trial and that there would be no one in this government to obstruct it, adding that this government would ensure that justice was delivered to the fullest extent.
