A woman has been elected as a Council President in a historic first in the Maldives.

PNC candidate Hawwa Abdul Aziz won today's by-election held to elect the president of F. Atoll Council.

She won the election against the opposition MDP candidate Ibrahim Khalil. Hawwa got 941 votes, while Khalil got 888 votes.

A total of 1,881 voters cast their votes in the elections and 52 were rejected.

Hussain Visham (Bulhike), known as the setter of the National Volleyball Team, and who is currently a council member, won the by-election held to elect the president of V. Felidhoo Council.

PNC candidate Bulhike won against independent candidate Abdul Shakoor Ibrahim. While Bulhike got 200 votes, Shakoor got 106 votes.

A total of 317 voters cast their votes and 11 votes were rejected.
