The no-confidence motion notice has been sent to Speaker and Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker and Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem.

Parliament Media Director Hassan Ziyau said a notice has been sent on Sunday to speaker Aslam and Saleem on a no-confidence motion filed against them.

According to the rules of the Parliament, within three days of filing a no-confidence motion against the Speaker or Deputy Speaker, the notice has to be sent to the Speaker and members of the Parliament.

According to parliamentary rules, after the expiry of the 14-day period of notice, the resolution has to be placed before the parliament on the next non-official holiday.

Prior to this, the General Committee of the Parliament will have to decide the time of debate on the resolution, the time to be given to the members to speak on the issue and the time given to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to respond.

The ruling PPM-PNC's PG group on Sunday submitted a no-confidence motion against the speaker and vice-president with the signatures of 23 lawmakers.

The no-confidence motion stated that Article 75 of the Constitution states that MPs should act in accordance with national interest and welfare of the people, and that no member shall use his power of office to promote the caste interests of that person or any other person who has a special relationship with him or her.

"The lawmakers should work for the benefit of the elected constituencies and for the benefit of all the people. The ruling coalition has alleged that Aslam, who was elected as the Speaker of the House on an MDP ticket, is trying to advance the interests of a particular party. Working is violative of Article 75 of the Constitution," the resolution said.

The resolution further stated that Article 200 of the Rules of Parliament lays down the procedure to be followed in granting approval to the Parliament, while MP from Hithadhoo North Constituency, Mohamed Aslam, as the Speaker of the Parliament, has acted in violation of Article 200(b), (l), (a) of the Rules of Parliament.

The resolution said that while the Speaker had violated the rules, Deputy Speaker Saleem had done nothing to stop them.

"Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem acted as the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament in violation of the Rules of Parliament and Article 75 of the Constitution in violation of the Constitution and constitutional obligations to promote the interests of a particular party," PPM/PNC said in a statement.

The actions of the Speaker and The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament are in violation of the rules of the House and the Constitution of the Parliament. Therefore, the PPM/PNC PG members have lost their confidence to continue in the post of Speaker Aslam, the resolution stated.
