BKMU calls on Mifco to buy yellow fin tuna from fishermen

The Body Kannelli Masveringe Union (BKMU) has called on MIFCO to buy yellow fin tuna.

In a statement, BKMU said that fishermen and fishing families need support in their quest for a stable life, and called upon the government to hold consultation meetings involving fishermen, fish buyers and the government to work towards a solution.

According to the government's promise in the presidential elections, the minimum price for purchase of yellow fin tuna should be fixed between MVR 80 and MVR 100.

Apart from this, there is a concern over the non-availability of day-to-day payments for the yellow fin tuna that MIFCO buys.

"We call upon the government to ensure the safety and security of yellow fin tuna fishermen and to further monitor our fishing seas," the statement said.
