PNC/PPM has said that they will ensure the opposition MDP fails in their efforts to impeach President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

A member of MDP's Parliamentary Group (PG) told 'One' on Monday that they have collected enough signatures to start the impeachment process. The PG member said that MDP will work together with The Democrats to impeach President Dr. Muizzu.

Speaking to press at the Parliament, PNC/PPM coalition member MP Ahmed Saleem said the coalition will not allow the impeachment of the President.

"We will not allow the President to be impeached at any cost. Just because a party collects signatures does not mean that they can impeach the President," MP Saleem said.

Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Tariq said that MDP no longer determines the public opinion on things. He added that this is evident from the Presidential Elections where the public elected President. Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

MP Tariq said that a majority of MDP members in the outgoing Parliament are not contesting for the Parliament because they are not confident they would be re-elected. He added that MDP's efforts to impeach President Dr. Muizzu will not be successful.

MP Tariq also highlighted that MDP's MPs had voted to approve some ministers against MDP's whipline, adding that it is a clear indication that MDP is divided on the issue as well.

"Let's talk about MDP saying they have the numbers. So far, decisions have been taken by the Parliament on the basis of 87 being total members. Now, the rules of the Parliament have been amended to include the total number of members, which will violate the previous decisions," Tariq said.

He said the signatures of 56 lawmakers would be required if the president were to be judged by the total number. Tariq expressed hope that the government would approach the Supreme Court regarding the change in mdp's total number of lawmakers. He said the party was trying to change the rules of parliament illegally.

One has learnt that 34 lawmakers have signed a resolution to remove President Muizzu.
