A large portion of the planned reclamation in Kaafu Atoll Gulhifalhu has been completed.

The Construction and Infrastructure Ministry said in a post yesterday that 100 hectares of land out of the 150 hectares scheduled to be dredged from the lagoon have been dredged till yesterday.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government began dredging the lagoon to relocate the commercial port and give 2,000 plots of land to the people of Male' City.

However, the government has decided to relocate the port to Thilafushi and designate a special economic zone for re-export in the area.

The project, which is being implemented with a $300 million (MVR 5 billion) loan from Exim Bank of India, has been awarded to Boskalis of the Netherlands. The project cost $130.4 million (MVR 2 billion).
