MDP has decided to refer the matter of loss of control and security on the parliament floor to the Security Services Committee.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, told a press conference on behalf of the MDP parliamentary group that the session scheduled to decide on the approval of the ministers was not held due to the clashes in the parliament yesterday.
He said the Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Aslam, was also very worried about what happened yesterday. He said he did not believe there was a safe and secure environment in parliament for members. Therefore, he will try to find out the reason for the loss of security and safety of the parliament, he said.
Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood said the parliamentary committee has the intention of submitting a criminal investigation into the incident.
Clashes broke out between the PNC and MDP members during the extraordinary session yesterday. Ahead of the vote, which was scheduled to take place at 1:30 pm today, MDP decided not to approve some ministers.
When members went to enter the hall to start the approval session, the government members locked the doors. Some members were at the administrative table and the speaker's table.
The government-affiliated MP, Abdulla Shaheem who recently signed up to the PNC, was seen sitting in the seat of the Speaker of Parliament. They also took away the cards and microphones from some of the tables. The session could not be continued due to the disruptions.
After that, some MDP members entered the house. Speaker Aslam also entered the parliament and took the chair. At that point, the members got into an argument and started fighting.
The fight took place when MP Shaheem, Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer and Isdhoo MP Ali Hameed tried to remove Aslam from his seat.
The MPs included Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Isa, Thinadhoo North MP Abdul Muguni and Thinadhoo South MP Abdullah Saneef.
Other members of the two parties arrived at the scene and started fighting. During the incident, Ahmed Isa and Abdullah Shaheem were injured in a clash. Shaheem was taken to hospital for treatment.
