A no-confidence motion has been submitted against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem.
PNC Parliamentary Group (PG) submitted the motion with signatures from 23 members.
The resolution, moved by the PPM/PNC, stated that Article 75 of the Constitution states that lawmakers should act in accordance with the national interest and the welfare of the people, and that no member shall use his power of office to promote the caste interests of that person or any other person who has a special relationship with him.
The ruling coalition has said that the lawmakers should work for the benefit of the elected constituencies and for the benefit of all the people. Aslam, who was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament on an MDP ticket, is trying to advance the interests of a particular party in violation of Article 75, the resolution said.
According to the resolution, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sent the cabinet to the parliament for approval as Article 129 of the Constitution states that all ministers in the council of ministers, except the vice president, will require the approval of the parliament.
"Article 200 of the Rules of Parliament lays down the procedure to be followed in granting approval to the Parliament, while the honourable MP from Hithadhoo North Constituency, Mohamed Aslam, as the Speaker of the Parliament, has acted in violation of Article 200(b), (l), (a) of the Rules of Parliament," PNC's PG group resolution said.
The resolution said that while the Speaker had violated the rules, Deputy Speaker Saleem had done nothing to stop them.
"Horafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, as the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, acted in violation of the Rules of Parliament and Article 75 of the Constitution in violation of the constitution and constitutional obligations to promote the interests of a particular party," PNC PG said in a statement.
"The actions of the Speaker and The Deputy Speaker of the House are in violation of the rules of the House and the Constitution of the Parliament. Therefore, PNC PG members has lost the confidence in Aslam to carry on as Speaker of Parliament," the statement said.
