Main opposition MDP has decided against approving Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haider, and Islamic Minister Dr. Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed.
Four ministers were not approved by MDP at a meeting of its parliamentary group held shortly before. A member of the party's parliament confirmed this to One Online.
MDP has decided not to approve Attorney General Usham, Islamic Minister Shaheem and Housing Minister Haider as well as Economic Minister Saeed. The Democrats have also decided not to approve Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer.
The Democrats and MDP have decided not to approve some ministers. The debate on the approval of the ministers will be held in an extraordinary session of the Parliament today. A vote on the approval of the ministers will be held at 1:30 pm today.
The issue of ministerial approval was moved by Maafannu South MP Mohamed Falaah, who is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Government Accountability Committee, which examined the issue.
Speaking on behalf of the MDP, Vice-President of the Parliament and Hoarafushi MP Mohammed Saleem said the requirements of the Constitution are simple and the Parliament should consider whether the minister can perform the duties assigned to them. The committee that examined the matter did not look into it, he said.
Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim from The Democrats alleged that the government was trying to bribe lawmakers, adding that the party has decided not to approve some ministers.
Speaking on behalf of PNC, Thulusdhoo MP Ibrahim Nazeem asked the MPs to approve the ministers as decided by the committee. Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir, who spoke on behalf of MDA, also stressed the importance of approving the ministers.
Stressing the importance of approving ministers, JP leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim said that not giving approval to ministers is destroying the country and it is selfishness.
