MDP and The Democrats have decided to work together to hold the government accountable as an opposition.

The Democrats, who were formed after the departure of a number of senior MDP leaders, tried in the last presidential elections to prevent MDP from power.

Speaking at a joint press conference held by MDP and The Democrats on Tuesday, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said that there are serious concerns about the government's actions now and it is expected that the government will retain a lot of rights if it gets a majority in parliament.

"Due to these concerns, we have decided to monitor these developments, hold this government accountable as a responsible opposition, and work together within the Parliament to bring about the necessary legislative changes to improve the democratic future of this country," Fayyaz said.

The Democrat's President Hassan Latheef also said that the statements made by those in the current government before the presidential election did not match with what is happening now and what is being done, especially because the actions of the government affect foreign relations.

Hassan Latheef and Fayyaz also said that MDP and Democrats have started working together to amend some laws, and they will be able to do so in the next term.
